Tourist Attraction In Semarang You Have To Visit

1. Lawang Sewu

Lawang Sewu means a thousand doors in English. Lawang Sewu is a magnificent building that was built in the Dutch colonial era and is now one of the most favorite tourism objects in Semarang (Tracy, 2016). Lawang Sewu was build in 1904 and finished in 1907, designed by Cosman Citroen. It used by Het Hoofdkantoor Van de Nederlandsch – Indische Spoorweg Maatscappij, a private train company. Semarang residents call it Lawang Sewu because of the many doors in the building, but actually it’s not really a thousand doors in that building, to be exact 429 doors. After the Japanese invaded Indonesia in 1942 in World War 2, the Dutch which were British allies were invaded by the arrival of Japanese soldiers allied with Germany, on this date the Japanese army first landed on the island of Java (Line, 2018). Mobilization of Japanese forces aimed at controlling Asia Pacific including Indonesia, took place very quickly. So as a result on March 8, 1942 General Ter Poorten, Commander of the Dutch Forces in Indonesia signed an unconditional surrender to Japan in Subang, West Java. This event is known as the Kalijati Agreement. After that the Dutch position is stepped down, all the Dutch’s assets belong to Japanese. In 6 August 1945 and 9 August 1945, Hiroshima and Nagasaki  has been bombed by allied forces and that makes Indonesia’s fighters become enthusiastic to fight for the Indonesia’s freedom. In 15 October 1945-20 October 1945 is happening a 5 Days Battle of Semarang in front of Lawang Sewu Building. The parties that involved in this battle was the People's Security Army & Indonesian youth against Japanese soldiers and the Japanese were surrender. The building which was a silent witness to the darkness of the Dutch colonial period, made Lawang Sewu a mystery place in Central Java. What's more, the building also witnessed the history of the battlefields of the homeland heroes to expel the last Japanese soldiers in power. Including silent witnesses of thousands of Indonesian fighters who were tortured at that location. Nowadays, Lawang Sewu Building become the number 1 tourist attraction in Semarang. You can go inside to see the inside of the building but it has been renovated in 2011 and turn become a museum.

Waroeng Semawis is a cullinary place in the Semarang’s China Town. Waroeng Semawis was born in conjunction with the 600th anniversary of Cheng Ho or Sam Poo Kong's landed in 2004 in the city of Semarang, originally held as the 'Semawis Lunar Market' at three days before the Chinese New Year at that time.
